World Soil Day
On 5 December we celebrate World Soil Day. Initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the aim of the World Soil Day is to raise awareness about soil erosion, pollution and desertification and how we can protect this essential resource through sustainable management and informed choices.

Soil is the basis of life: it supports plant growth, food production, water purification and storage, and plays an important role in carbon sequestration. Yet soil is under threat from erosion, pollution, over-cultivation and climate change worldwide.
The aim of the World Soil Day is to inspire us to protect soil - not just globally, but locally and in our daily lives. We can do more to protect soil ourselves.
- Composting: by composting household green waste, we can provide natural nutrients for the soil while reducing the burden on landfills.
- Sustainable buying: support local farmers who use environmentally friendly farming methods to help preserve soil health.
- Green spaces: plant trees, shrubs or ground cover plants to help prevent erosion and improve soil quality.
- Water conservation: Use water efficiently to prevent soil leaching and degradation.
World Soil Day reminds us that soil conservation is not just a responsibility of farmers, but a shared responsibility of all of us.
